Vodafone Group
Vodafone Group has seen static markets in Europe, whilst seeing strong growth in the emerging markets. Using Vodafone's data, the impact of India is stricking, whilst Vodacom too would have been showing steady growth if it had not had to tackle SIM card registration in its major market (South Africa).

This in turn highlights a major weakness with Vodacom, namely how dominant South Africa is in its regional operations; or conversly how small its other African operations are. Vodacom also carried a major revision in the Democratic Republic of the Congo which wiped off a significant number of subscribers. It also has an ongoing ownship dispute in the DRC, leaving Vodacom with a dilemma: whether to pull out or buy out its partner. Given the current low mobile penetration in the DRC, should the government be able to overcome the current barriers to economic growth, the DRC has considerable potential. Vodafone has other African interests, notably Ghana and a stake in Kenya's Safaricom. The latter has enjoyed considerable success with is M-PESA mobile money product, which has been rolled in other markets. Vodacom was reported in September 2011 as being in discussions to acquire a stake in Malawi's Telekom Networks Malawi, which has just over a million mobile subscribers.

Egypt remains a key market - ignoring the present local difficulties - Vodafone and Mobinil have been running neck-and-neck to grow their subscriber bases.

And not too far away geographically is Turkey, where Vodafone has staged a remarkable recovery. In 2009 it looked as if Vodafone might pass ownership of its then failing localoperation over to T-Mobile: yet 12 months later Vodafone has reversed its fortunes in a dramatic turn-around.

The importance of India to Vodafone can be judged by the number of references to this key market in Market Mettle's Vodafone Watch dated January 2011.
