  • Based on data published by some of the operators for Q3 2015, we estimate that Malawi had 6.2mn mobile telephony subscribers at the end of 2015, up by 12.6% y-o-y and equivalent to a mobile penetration rate of almost 38%. In the five years to 2020, we now predict that Malawi's mobile market will grow to surpass 9.7mn mobile customers. 3G subscriptions are expected to grow from 19.8% of mobile subscriptions in 2015 to over 31% of the total market in 2020.

  • We estimate that Mozambique had 16.4mn mobile telephony subscribers at the end of 2015, up by 8.3% y-o-y and equivalent to a mobile penetration rate of 58.5%. We expect there to be almost 21mn mobile subscriptions and a penetration rate of 65.6% in Mozambique by 2020. We estimate that 3G subscriptions accounted for 10.5% of Mozambican mobile subscribers in 2015 and expect 3G subscribers to rise to over 19% of total subscriptions by 2020.

  • By 2020, we forecast Malawi's internet penetration to reach 15%. However, the country's broadband penetration rate will remain underwhelming at just 0.7%. Although internet penetration in Mozambique is expected to reach 27% by 2020, broadband penetration will reach only 1%.
