Latest Updates & Industry Developments

  • Mobile subscriptions growth in Myanmar was stronger than expected in 2015, as Telenor outperformed its peers. 3G migration will be rapid as new operators eschew 2G. Meanwhile, consolidation in Cambodia and the purging of inactive SIMs in Laos weigh on those markets' growth trajectories. Price competition undermines the value of 3G networks.

  • Mobile substitution in all three markets acts as a disincentive for investment in wireline voice and broadband. xDSL is the primary delivery platform as fibre is too expensive. We do not envisage wireline broadband to become a mass-market phenomenon in any of these three markets in the medium to long term.
