This IDC study (a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J10170104) analyzes the small and medium-sized business (SMB) IT market results in 2009 and provides forecasts from 2010 to 2014 based on the Japan SMB Market User Survey, which was conducted in March 2010; product information based on vendor surveys up to March 2010, and the latest economic conditions. Some SMBs in Japan are seeing gradual improvements in their business performance though many are still struggling and suppressing their IT spending. Therefore, the Japan SMB IT market will maintain negative growth in 2010 and will only register positive growth by 2011. Full-scale recovery will, however, not take place until after 2012. Even after 2012, the market will not enjoy high growth rates like it did before 2007 because of the increased use of software as a service (SaaS), cloud computing, and business process outsourcing (BPO) services. Many IT vendors are already providing SaaS, cloud computing, and BPO services to SMB users, as these have proven to be effective means of expanding their reach. However, they are also likely to cause the contraction of the Japan SMB IT market in the medium to long term.

"IT vendors are required to take additional measures such as promoting new areas of IT spending to expand the SMB IT market," says Hitoshi Ichimura, market analyst, IT Spending Research, IDC Japan.
