The Canadian communications market, including traditional pay-TV, generated $37.5bn in 2009, a year-over-year decrease of 1.5% that resulted from the economic downturn and decreases in the market for fixed and mobile voice services. Increased competition and lower cost minutes led to decreases of 9.5% and 6.8% for mobile voice and fixed circuit-switched voice, respectively. Going forward, we expect the market to grow at a CAGR of 2.8% from year-end 2009 to year-end 2014, reaching $43.1bn in 2014. We estimate that mobile data will be the fastest growing segment with a CAGR of 24.2% from 2009 to 2014 when it will generate $7.7bn up from $2.6bn in 2009; MNOs offer mobile broadband service for laptops starting at C$30 for 500MB per month. USB dongles are available for free with three-year contracts, and “flex” plans are also available that automatically adjust as the subscriber’s monthly usage fluctuates.
