The worsening economic situation and imminent recession is already impacting the UK IT services market. We expect this to continue through the forecast period to 2012. Growth in each service line will not be affected in the same way or to the same degree, however. In infrastructure services, greater price competitiveness will slow growth, especially in the latter half of the period. In project services, growth will decelerate rapidly throughout the time, though some areas that offer cost savings to end-users will benefit in the near term. Growth will reduce in application-led outsourcing (ALO), but because of relatively long contracts, we project a phased impact. Although growth in business process outsourcing (BPO) will diminish, it will still be the fastest-growing IT service line up to 2012, spurred by the reprioritising of cost takeout. The public sector will not be immune to the problems facing the wider economy. Existing high levels of public sector borrowing and maturing large deals will limit growth in government spending on IT services from 2010 onwards.
