The Chinese telecoms market is potentially vast due to China’s enormous population and high GDP growth. During 2009, it has attracted much attention due to impressive subscriber growth across various telecoms services, with increasing levels of competition between the major operators.

China’s fixed market is a duopoly, with China Telecom and China Unicom the two dominant providers of local fixed network services. In the broadband market, there has been strong growth in 2009 and subscribers already number more than 100 million. Nevertheless, there is still considerable growth potential in the next few years in terms of household penetration.

In the mobile market, there are three network operators – China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. At the beginning of 2009, the three operators were granted 3G licences with different standards – TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and CDMA/EV-DO respectively. China Mobile favours rollout of TD-LTE to maintain its dominant position, and announced a trial service in Shanghai in 2010. With 3G network rollout in most cities of China, there is significant potential for the development of wireless broadband services.
