Report Synopsis

FTTH services are a relatively new development. The access to a Household (but not to a large business) has generally used the traditional copper access network of the incumbent provider – either directly, or via Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) via an alternative network operator.

More capacity can be produced from the copper loop, with ADSL providing up to 8MB, ADSL2+ providing up to 24MB and VDSL providing up to 50MB. The theoretical capacity is not guaranteed as it is dependent on distance from the individual exchange.

But it is only directly connected fibre which can provide the extra capacity that may be required for high speed applications such as HDTV. As consumers start to reach the capacity ceiling of a copper access network, operators are considering how to further boost capacity and up-sell new applications.

This new report surveys the pricing of 26 infrastructure FTTH providers across 19 European countries. It includes examples of FTTH service provider pricing (where multiple service providers use the same open access FTTH infrastructure) and includes comparable ADSL Broadband and Cable TV high speed broadband pricing. It also includes pricing from key FTTH providers in Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea where fibre deployments are more common as a benchmark.
