Is mobile broadband a success story in Austria?
On April 4, 2008, the Austrian telecom regulator (the RTR) reported that mobile broadband connections reached 482,000 in Q3 2007, and we estimate this number to be 550,000 at year-end 2007. The low level of competition in the fixed broadband market places mobile operators in a comfortable position to compete with fixed operators. Mobile operators are offering very attractive mobile broadband plans that include higher speeds at cheaper prices compared with DSL. Pyramid Research expects that mobile broadband connections will grow at a CAGR of 24% between 2007 and 2012, reaching 1.6m in 2012. It will overtake cable as the second most important broadband technology in 2009, accounting for 34% of total broadband connections and making mobile broadband a success story in Austria.
