In February 2007, new fixed operator Wana launched its residential fixed services under the Bayn brand. Previously, the fixed market had been dominated by the incumbent, Maroc Telecom, with minimal challenges by the second universal operator, Meditel.

While mobile market liberalization has contributed to tremendous growth in mobile penetration, fixed penetration growth has been stalled over the past few years.
The initial efforts to liberalize the fixed market in 2002 failed to attract a second fixed operator. Another attempt to liberalize the market in 2005 resulted in the allocation of two fixed licenses to Meditel and Maroc Connect, now Wana. Wana’s launch this year has revitalized the fixed market beyond all previous expectations, and the company is seeing tremendous success. Wana’s innovative limited-mobility product, its understanding of the Moroccan market and its strong relationship with the regulator will allow its rapid growth to continue in the short term, but we expect to see some cannibalization between Wana’s fixed and mobile services when it launches its mobile operations by mid-2008.
