South Korea: bundling its way to FMC
A new regulation policy roadmap will allow KT Corporation and SK Telecom (fixed and mobile operators, respectively, with recognized significant market power), to discount bundled products by as much as 10% of the product price. These new guidelines are set to come into effect in the second half of the year following parliamentary approval. We forecast that this development will benefit consumers via lower across-the-board prices as players attempt to secure bundled subscribers; as a consequence however, this will hasten FMC as these integrated players seek to address their cost bases. Mobile incumbent SK Telecom (SKT), the only other viable competition in a converged market space to KT Corporation (KT), may lose out to the fixed incumbent as the latter moves aggressively into bundling fixed and wireless voice, broadband, and multimedia services.
