Outlining the current size of the market and offering you complete profiles of major players, this market brief explains the technical basics of the WiMAX standard, gives you an update on the scope and future prospects of the developing WiMAX market worldwide. Including a summary of WiMAX technical standards, key players and a snapshot of the competitive network landscape, this market brief offers you a quick and easy understanding of the key activities in this space and the key terms and phrases in use.

The growth in the adoption of the Internet over the last few years has increased the demand for high-speed Internet access. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable Internet connections have gained popularity and taken market share from the conventional way to access the Internet, through a dial-up connection. Now, Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technologies are providing last-mile connectivity over DSL and cable connections. Earlier, BWA deployments included wireless LAN based on 802.11 technologies, more commonly known as WiFi; however, now Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) based on 802.16 technologies are gaining popularity.

The 802.16 technologies offer fixed broadband wireless access to residential and small business users. These also enable Internet access in those countries where network infrastructure is not in place for wireline communications. Currently, 802.16e is in the process of standardisation, which, on completion, can provide end users with broadband access on the move. 802.16 standards are also referred to as WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) and the terms are used interchangeably. The technology is moving towards mobility services, and a standard for the mobile broadband access evolved as IEEE 802.20 or Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (MBWA).
